Rules of the Game: The Simplest, Most Practical Ways to Ace Your GCSE, IGCSE and A-Level Examinations

Every game has a manual—a set of practical rules that tells you how to play it. Everyone starts as a beginner. You learn the rules, practise the rules and eventually master the game.

Rule 1: Read the playing manual

The syllabus tells you what you need to know, what you need to do with that knowledge, how you will be assessed and which skills carry the greatest weight.

Rule 2: Train the equipment you're playing with

Academic skills are trainable. Repeated retrieval, application, correction and practice help your brain become better at the work an examination asks you to perform.

Rule 3: Play the game

Use real questions, work within the time constraints and review where marks were lost. Past papers, mark schemes and examiner reports turn a final grade into useful evidence.
