Rules of the Game: The Simplest, Most Practical Ways to Ace Your GCSE, IGCSE and A-Level Examinations

Every game has a manual—a set of practical rules that tells you how to play it. And rules, might I add, make games rather predictable.

A chess master is simply someone who studied the rules and learnt to apply them, over and over again, through practice. They started as a beginner, learnt the rules, practised them repeatedly and eventually became a pro.

The key takeaway here is simple:

Everyone starts as a beginner. You learn the rules. You practise the rules. Eventually, you master the game.

Everyone starts at zero

I was on a trip recently with a friend of a friend when the topic of billionaires came up.

He believes that to become a billionaire, you need to be part of a certain society or club. In his view, the path looks something like this:

Be in the right circle → Join a secret society → Attain billionaire status.

I made a different argument.

What do most tech billionaires have in common?

They built companies that became extraordinarily valuable.

And before the company, there was an idea.

Where do ideas come from?

The mind.

Now, before we complicate this with arguments about background, privilege, exposure, capital and access—and yes, those things matter—I want us to focus for a moment on what we have in common rather than what we don't.

Most of us have minds capable of generating ideas.

Those ideas can come from experience, pain, observation, curiosity, frustration, studying trends—the list is endless.

Of course, most of the interesting ideas you and I formulate will never become unicorns.

But the ideas that do tend to have something important in common: they solve valuable problems for a lot of people.

And if there is one thing human beings have an abundance of, it is problems.

We discuss problems over lunch. On dates. At work. In marriages. In friendships. Entire professions exist because somebody has a problem and somebody else knows how to solve it.

The more painful and widespread the problem, the more valuable an effective solution can become.

Of course, identifying a massive problem is only the beginning.

A founder still needs the capabilities required to execute the vision: to build the solution, ship it, listen to feedback, improve it, survive tremendous setbacks, lead people, distribute the product and continue learning when reality proves their assumptions wrong.

But here's the part that interests me:

Those are capabilities.

And capabilities can be developed.

Nobody is born knowing how to build a billion-dollar technology company.

Just as nobody is born a chess master.

And nobody is born a straight-A student.

They learn.

They practise.

They fail.

They adjust.

They practise again.

And somewhere along the way, what once required tremendous conscious effort begins to look suspiciously like talent.

This is why I believe the phrase education is the key to success has been misunderstood.

We often equate education with school.

School is one place where education can happen, but education itself is much larger than school.

You acquire knowledge. You practise applying it. Practice exposes the limitations of what you know. You encounter problems your existing knowledge cannot solve. You identify patterns. You develop new solutions.

Practice allows you to look under the hood.

Eventually, you don't merely know the rules.

You understand the game.

Everything is a game

Chess is a game—obviously.

But building a unicorn is a game too.

And so is acing an examination.

The beautiful thing about highly structured external examinations such as GCSEs, IGCSEs and A Levels is that the game isn't completely hidden from you.

There are rules.

There is evidence.

There are years of previous games you can study.

And, in many cases, there is literally a manual.

So let's get into it.

What are the rules of the game?

Rule 1: Read the playing manual

Every one of these examinations has a playing manual:

The syllabus.

Students often treat the syllabus as something written for teachers.

Big mistake.

The syllabus tells you what you need to know through the subject content.

It tells you what you need to be able to do with that knowledge through the assessment objectives and other stated requirements.

Depending on the subject and examination, knowing something may not be enough. You may need to apply it, analyse it, evaluate it, communicate it, calculate with it, interpret it, construct an argument from it or use precise subject-specific terminology.

And then there are the weightings.

These tell you how much of the examination is devoted to different kinds of performance.

That matters.

Because if you spend almost all your study time acquiring knowledge while the examination awards a substantial proportion of its marks for applying, analysing or evaluating that knowledge, you haven't necessarily prepared badly.

You've prepared incompletely.

The syllabus also contains examination structure, assessment information and subject-specific requirements that help you understand how the game will actually be played.

So before you start blindly revising:

Read the manual.

Know what you're being asked to master.

Know what you're being assessed on.

Know how you're being assessed.

And know which skills carry the greatest weight.

Rule 2: Train the equipment you're playing with

Now we're going slightly outside the examination manual because we need to talk about the equipment you're using to play this game:

your brain.

The brain is plastic.

In simple terms, it changes in response to experience and repeated activity.

That matters enormously for learning.

You do not develop expertise simply by exposing yourself to information once.

You develop it through repeated retrieval, application, correction and practice.

Think about something you can now do almost automatically.

Reading.

Typing.

Driving.

Using your phone.

At some point, these actions demanded far more conscious attention than they do today.

Repeated practice changed that.

Academic skills are trainable too.

If an examination repeatedly requires you to analyse data, practise analysing data.

If it requires you to construct arguments, construct arguments.

If it requires precise mathematical reasoning, practise precise mathematical reasoning.

If it requires you to evaluate evidence, don't spend all your time merely memorising the evidence.

Train the skill the examination is going to ask you to perform.

Your brain becomes better at what you repeatedly ask it to do.

So be very careful what you're repeatedly asking it to do.

Rule 3: Play the game

You don't become a chess master by reading about chess.

At some point, you have to sit at the board.

The same applies to examinations.

You can read every chapter.

Highlight every textbook.

Make beautiful notes.

Watch every revision video.

And still be poorly prepared to perform under examination conditions.

Because studying the game and playing the game are not the same skill.

There is a reason employers often distinguish between academic qualifications and professional experience. Someone can graduate with exceptional marks and still require practical experience before they can operate independently in an industry.

Practice creates a different kind of education.

It exposes what theory alone cannot.

Examinations work the same way.

Sit the papers.

Use real questions.

Work within the time constraints.

Apply the rules.

Then mark what happened.

Where did you lose marks?

Was it because you didn't know something?

Or because you knew it but couldn't apply it?

Did you misunderstand what the question wanted?

Did you run out of time?

Was your answer correct but insufficiently precise?

Did you know the concept but fail to communicate enough points for the available marks?

Did the same mistake appear again three papers later?

Play. Review. Correct. Play again.

That is how the rules stop being information and become capability.

So, can anyone ace these examinations?

Remember my friend of a friend?

You're probably wondering who won our billionaire argument.

Neither of us.

He remained convinced of his belief. Perhaps he has evidence he didn't share with me. Perhaps his belief comes from years of trying without experiencing a meaningful breakthrough.

And perhaps I'm simply an annoyingly optimistic person who believes far more is learnable than we sometimes allow ourselves to believe.

Either way, I think there is a more important lesson.

Whatever you believe about your capabilities, interrogate the evidence.

Don't allow an invisible assumption to become a permanent conclusion simply because you've carried it for years.

Maybe you've failed before.

Maybe you've studied hard and still received disappointing results.

Maybe you've watched other students seemingly understand things effortlessly while you fought for every mark.

Maybe experience has convinced you that you simply aren't “an A student.”

But an examination result is evidence of performance, not a permanent definition of your intellectual capacity.

And highly structured examinations give us something incredibly useful:

They leave clues.

The syllabus tells us what is expected.

Assessment objectives tell us which capabilities matter.

Past papers show us how those capabilities are tested.

Mark schemes show us how responses are rewarded.

Examiner reports reveal recurring mistakes and misunderstandings.

And your own attempts produce evidence about where you are losing marks.

That makes the game far less mysterious than it feels when all you're looking at is the final grade.
